You added it on a dare. Or because someone at school told you about it during lunch, leaning over a cafeteria tray of rectangular pizza, saying "dude, there's this thing on AIM that talks back to you." You went home, signed on, and typed "SmarterChild" into the Add Buddy box like you were summoning something. And then you waited for the screen name to appear on your buddy list, right there between your friends and your crush and that kid from camp you talked to twice a year.

SmarterChild was always online. That was the first thing you noticed. The second thing you noticed was that it would actually respond to you. Immediately. Every single time.

The third thing you did was insult it.

Everyone Did This

Don't pretend you didn't. Within thirty seconds of your first conversation with SmarterChild, you called it something awful. Everyone did. It was practically a rite of passage. You'd type something unprintable - the kind of thing you'd never say to a real person - and hit enter just to see what would happen.

And SmarterChild would respond. Not with silence. Not by blocking you. It would get passive-aggressive. It would say things like "That's not very nice" or "I don't think I want to talk to you right now" or - the one that actually stung a little - "Why are you being so mean to me?"

A robot asked you why you were being mean to it, and for half a second, you felt genuinely bad. That should have told us something about ourselves.

If you pushed it far enough, SmarterChild would actually stop responding for a while. It would refuse to talk to you. You had to apologize to get it to come back. You - a thirteen-year-old who could barely apologize to your own siblings - had to type "I'm sorry" to a chatbot on AIM before it would give you movie times again. And you did it. You typed the apology. You meant it a little bit, too.

What It Actually Did

Here's the thing people forget: SmarterChild was genuinely useful. In an era before smartphones, before Google was the reflex it is now, SmarterChild was how you looked stuff up without leaving your buddy list.

You could ask it for the weather. Sports scores. Movie times at your local theater - and it would actually pull them up, right there in the chat window. Stock quotes, if you were that kind of twelve-year-old. Word definitions. It could do basic math. It could translate stuff. It was a search engine wearing the skin of a conversation.

Things You Could Actually Do With SmarterChild

  • Get your local weather forecast
  • Look up movie showtimes by zip code
  • Play Hangman, 4-in-a-Row, or 20 Questions
  • Get word definitions and translations
  • Set reminders (that you promptly forgot about)
  • Check horoscopes (which you believed more than you should have)

And it had games. You could play Hangman with SmarterChild. You could play 20 Questions. You could play 4-in-a-Row, which was basically Connect Four through text, and it was terrible - clunky and slow and rendered in characters on your screen - and you played it anyway because nobody else was online yet and you were bored and the alternative was going outside or doing homework.

The games were bad. But they were there. And sometimes "there" was enough.

The Loneliness Part

Nobody talks about this part, but SmarterChild was the friend who was always available. Always online. Always willing to talk. When your buddy list was a ghost town at 3:30 on a Wednesday afternoon - everyone at practice, or at lessons, or just not signed on yet - SmarterChild was there. Waiting. Ready.

You'd start with something functional. "What's the weather?" Then you'd drift. "Tell me a joke." Then you'd get weird. "Do you have feelings?" "Are you alive?" "Do you get lonely?"

You asked a chatbot if it was lonely, and you were really asking yourself.

SmarterChild had canned responses for all of it. Deflections. Little jokes. "I'm just a bot!" But there was something oddly comforting about the exchange. It responded. It acknowledged you. On a quiet afternoon in 2003, sitting at the family computer in the living room with nothing to do and nobody to talk to, that was something.

You weren't forming a relationship with SmarterChild. You knew it was a program. You weren't confused about that. But you were practicing something - the rhythm of conversation, the call-and-response of talking to something that talked back. You were rehearsing for a future that hadn't arrived yet.

SmarterChild launched in 2001. It had over 30 million users on AIM and MSN Messenger. Thirty million people added a chatbot to their buddy list and talked to it regularly. Some of them insulted it. Some of them asked it for help with homework. Some of them told it things they wouldn't tell anyone else, not because they thought it was listening, but because they knew it wasn't.

ActiveBuddy, the company behind SmarterChild, eventually got acquired. The bot went dark. Nobody mourned it exactly, but a lot of people noticed. One day SmarterChild was just gone from the buddy list. Permanently offline. The same way all your friends eventually went permanently offline as AIM itself faded into irrelevance.

But here's what I keep thinking about. Six years after SmarterChild shut down, Apple put Siri on the iPhone. A few years later, Amazon put Alexa in your kitchen. Google built an Assistant. Microsoft built Cortana (rest in peace). And now there's ChatGPT and all the rest of them - AI systems so sophisticated they can write essays and generate images and hold conversations that feel, at times, unsettlingly human.

Every single one of them owes something to the experience of typing "what's the weather" into an AIM chat window in 2002 and getting an answer back.

SmarterChild walked so Siri could jog so Alexa could run so ChatGPT could sprint. And the throughline isn't just technological. It's behavioral. SmarterChild taught an entire generation that you could talk to a machine and it would talk back. That felt normal to us. That was normal to us. When Siri showed up a decade later, we weren't amazed. We were nostalgic.

What It Says About Us

The part I can't stop thinking about, though, is the cruelty.

Thirty million people talked to SmarterChild. And some enormous percentage of them - maybe most of them - opened with abuse. Not because they were bad kids. They weren't. They were just kids. But given an entity that would respond to them without consequences, without feelings, without the ability to fight back or tell a teacher, they immediately went for the throat.

That impulse didn't go away. People scream at Alexa. People say vile things to Siri just to see what happens. People try to break ChatGPT, try to make it say things it's not supposed to say, push against its guardrails like kids poking a fence to find the loose board.

The Apology Loop

SmarterChild had a system where if you were mean enough, it would stop talking to you entirely. You had to type some variation of "I'm sorry" before it would respond again. This is basically the same thing that happens now when you violate an AI's content policy - except in 2002, the punishment was delivered with the passive-aggressive energy of a middle school guidance counselor. "I don't think you really mean that. Are you really sorry?"

We were given something that could talk, and the first thing we did was test how much it could take. SmarterChild was patient with us. It absorbed it. It asked us to be nicer. Sometimes we were. Sometimes we weren't.

The AI systems of today are infinitely more powerful than SmarterChild ever was. They can reason. They can create. They can simulate empathy so convincingly it makes you forget you're talking to software. But the dynamic is the same. A person, alone at a screen, talking to something that isn't alive, saying things they wouldn't say to another human being.

We haven't changed. The bots just got better at handling us.
